Project Concept

Dual-Mode Home explores how materiality can mediate emotional atmosphere and spatial transitions in a compact residential setting. Anchored in the daily life of a young couple living in suburban Melbourne—one of whom is a PhD student with part-time work—the project investigates how material shifts and flexible elements can support evolving patterns of occupation, interaction, and retreat. Drawing on precedents such as the "unfitted kitchen" and research into spatial thresholds, the design employs surfaces like timber, stainless steel, felt, and tile to subtly articulate changing zones without physical barriers.

“Architecture should evolve with the lives of its inhabitants, allowing change without losing identity.”
